Non English Speaking

As one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) countries in the world, the NSW SES recognises the importance of equal access to services and information for all people, regardless of their background.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (Migration, Australia 3412.0, 2007-8), one quarter of Australia’s population is born overseas. Being able to consult and communicate effectively with diverse communities is a vital component of risk management, disaster mitigation, community engagement, response and recovery.

NSW is made up of many diverse people and cultures. The NSW SES aims to provide information on tsunamis, storms and tsunami in key community languages.

The NSW SES is committed to providing information on and resources for preparing for, responding to and recovering from tsunamis, storms and tsunami to people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

These pages contain valuable tsunami, storm and tsunami information in different languages. The development of these resources is an ongoing project across different emergency services.

Tsunami information in different languages

The NSW SES along with Canterbury SES Unit and the Canterbury City Council developed TsunamiSafe brochures in six community languages through funding from the NRMA. The languages include Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Korean and Vietnamese.

132 500 Magnet

SES 132 500

The SES 132 500 Magnet was developed in collaboration with the Sydney Migrant Resource Centre to visually show the number to call for tsunami and storm emergencies.

The magnet was so popular; the SES developed them for distribution to the whole of the community.
